The smartphone htc One was one of our favorite phones for 2013: great construction & materials, a classy design, a large & sharp display & no manhandling of Android. For 2014 HTC is back with their flagship follow-up, the htc One M8. It improves on most everything. There"s even more metal in the casing và the brushed aluminum wraps around the sides so there"s no polycarbonate sandwich. The display is even larger at 5" & it"s still one of the nicer full HD điện thoại cảm ứng thông minh panels on the market. Smartphone htc Sense 6 as ever offers tasteful, small customizations of android without slapping on heavy skins. The old One"s odd front buttons have been replaced by on-screen buttons, and we prefer that even if they vì chưng rob us of a little screen real estate.

*

As you"d expect, the internals have a boost too, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU clocked at 2.3GHz inside. This quad chip core CPU is fast yet power-frugal and it supports quick charging, unlike the old One that took forever khổng lồ charge. This is a modest CPU improvement over the Snapdragon 800 that reigned king for a few months, but it does bring important tư vấn for DDR3 RAM, which can make for noticeable improvement in graphics performance. The htc One M8 has 2 gigs of DDR3 RAM và 32 gigs of internal storage with ~23 gigs available. Even better, there"s a micro
SD thẻ slot compatible with SDXC cards for storage expansion. The phone runs android 4.4 Kit
Kat, và HTC Sense và Blink
Feed are now available as downloads from Google Play, so you won"t have to lớn wait for carrier firmware updates khổng lồ get the latest tweaks.

The điện thoại htc One M8 will be available on all major carriers at the usual $199 with 2 year contract và $600 to $640 without contract. All carriers sell the new gray brushed aluminum "gunmetal gray" color, and Verizon also offers the light silver matte aluminum màu sắc matching the old One"s finish. Lastly, there"s a gold version that"s available on AT&T, Sprint, Verizon & as a Google Play Edition (unlocked GSM) và unlocked developer edition (direct from HTC).

Design & Ergonomics

We have the new brushed aluminum model on Verizon wireless in for review, & it"s simply stunning. It looks more lượt thích stainless steel and it"s modern, elegant & unique. The white matte mã sản phẩm looks much lượt thích the last generation smartphone htc One và gold is the màu sắc of a gold bar. The phone"s curves fit the hand perfectly and there"s just enough straightness to the edges to lớn provide grip. It"s a tall phone among 5" models, but no taller than the Sony Xperia Z1S. It"s taller than the Samsung Galaxy S4 và Nokia Lumia Icon. Why so tall? to accommodate the stereo htc Boom
Sound speakers that flank the top và bottom of the display. Speaking of Boom
Sound, điện thoại htc says these speakers are 25% louder than the old One, và it is in fact as loud as some Ultrabooks we"ve reviewed. Beats audio is gone, since smartphone htc sold their cốt truyện of Beats, and that means a less bass-heavy sound.

This is a unibody phone with even more metal than the last model (90% vs. 70%). The polycarbonate on the sides is gone, along with the Oreo look. Some detail-minded folks fussed about the perfection or lack of perfection where the polycarbonate met metal on the old model, & now you"ve got clean wrap-around metal with a polished chamfer that"s sure to lớn please. In a world where most game android phones are shiny & plastic, the smartphone htc One M8 is one of the few to lớn take on the i
Phone. Sony"s Xperia line is the only other to lớn pay so much attention to materials và design, but they vì it with glass more than metal.

*

The đứng đầu end cap isn"t metal, but rather glossy black glass or plastic, và this area provides a window lớn the world for the many wireless radios in the phone. Metal edges surround this area so it"s not vulnerable. The đứng đầu power button might drive some folks crazy since it"s hard to lớn reach with one hand unless you have truly big mitts, so htc added a tap to lớn wake feature, not unlike LG"s Knock On feature. Tapping twice on the screen gets the job done for me, so no complaints. The power button still does double-duty as the IR blaster window for the AV remote that works with htc TV (powered by Peel và providing a TV programming guide in addition lớn remote control of your trang chủ theater gear).

The right side volume rocker is easy to operate (sometimes by accident) và it"s well finished with no rattles. There"s a nano SIM card tray on the left & a micro
SD thẻ tray on the right--both require use of a paperclip or HTC"s included poke tool to lớn open. That"s fine for the SIM since one normally doesn"t remove that often, but annoying for the micro
SD card. I assume there wasn"t enough room to địa chỉ cửa hàng the SD thẻ slot without resorting to lớn the tiny little tray design. The micro USB port & headphone jack are located on the bottom & the 2600 m
Ah battery is sealed inside. This phone is locked up tight as a drum và it"s not something that"s easy khổng lồ take apart for service. In fact, I suspect only factory service techs can bởi anything with the M8.

HTC One M8 Harman Kardon Edition

HTC, Sprint and Harman Kardon got together to make Boom
Sound even better. The htc One M8 Harman/Kardon Edition is exclusive to Sprint in the US, và for $30 more you get better audio quality, a spiffy mix of Harman/Kardon AE (Audio Enhanced) $150 earbuds in the box & the option lớn buy the very good, both sonically and in terms of design, HK Onyx Studio bluetooth speaker for $99 (it lists for $399).

*

The phone"s hardware specs và design are the same as the standard edition M8, but the H/K edition is finished in đen with champagne accents over the front speakers. The software gets some tweaks with an active wallpaper them that emphasizes album covers, quick access to tuy vậy ID and of course settings for Harman/Kardon enhanced audio. There"s Clari-Fi, which attempts khổng lồ restore bass & trebles lost in compression with lossy formats like MP3, and Live
Stage (headphones only) that improves the sound stage by adding dimensionality. Both vị improve sound and make vocals và instruments sound more full và natural. Live
Stage improves presence a bit, and both effects slightly drop audio levels. For jazz, folk, soft rock và classical these are welcome enhancements, but for brash in your face hard rock you might want to turn these effect off for a louder & more raw sound.

Display

The M8 has a 5" full HD LCD 1920 x 1080 display that"s bright, extremely sharp & decently color accurate. It uses an IPS-like display and colors are natural rather than cartoony, and viewing angles are wide. It"s viewable outdoors and whites are very bright & clean while blacks are decent but not as inky as AMOLED & Super AMOLED displays. Yes, it"s a wee bit bigger than the last generation điện thoại htc One, but you vì lose some screen acreage at the bottom for the three virtual apk buttons. These buttons will go into hiding mode when using full screen apps like Gallery or games, so they aren"t visually intrusive. On the other hand, finding them can be trying-- tap in the vague area where they reside under a fog of đen until they appear. Google wants manufacturers to lớn move away from hardware buttons, so don"t blame htc if you dislike on-screen buttons.

Phone và Data

The htc One M8 on Verizon has very good voice quality and average hotline volume through the earpiece. Incoming voice was clear & full và our hotline recipients said we sounded quite loud & also clear. As you might guess, speakerphone calls can really boom thanks to lớn HTC"s Boom
Sound speakers. The M8 behaved better with a variety of bluetooth không dây headsets và my car"s built-in bluetooth không dây than did the điện thoại htc One M7 (old One) that was generally quieter than average for calls.

Data speeds were above average on our Verizon Wireless reviews unit, and near a highway và tower the phone exceeded 50mbps download speeds. The updated wireless chipset with higher max LTE speeds is taking care of business nicely here. Lượt thích all modern smartphones, the htc One M8 has a mobile hotspot feature so you can use your phone as a high speed wireless modem for a máy tính xách tay or tablet (your carrier may charge extra for this feature).

Benchmarks

We"ve already talked about the Snapdragon 801 quad bộ vi xử lý core CPU with Adreno 330 graphics & DDR3 RAM support. It"s currently the fastest điện thoại thông minh chip on the market, and it leads the Snapdragon 800 by a small margin. Smartphone htc admitted that like Samsung, they trò chơi benchmarks, cranking up the CPU performance when the M8 detects popular benchmark apps are running. Samsung gave up the practice and removed the benchmark detection for Galaxy phones receiving the android 4.4 Kit
Kat update, & we"d like to see all manufacturers stop this.

Some smartphone htc M8s (not US models at launch) have a setting in developer options khổng lồ turn on high performance CPU mode for all apps. When playing 3d games, the phone gets warm on the back, but not hot. It gets warm enough that I wouldn"t enable overclocking, since thermal throttling will likely negate it quickly enough.

The Cameras

The One has a very impressive 5 megapixel front camera with BSI và HDR. It can shoot 1080p đoạn phim too, and that means high quality video chat. Given the popularity of selfies, we"re glad lớn see a manufacturer actually care about front camera quality-- great stuff! I was truly impressed with video quality and you can see it in action in our đoạn clip review.

The rear camera unfortunately sticks with the 4MP equivalent Ultrapixel camera seen on the last generation htc One. The good part is just as with the M7, you get a wide aperture lens & larger px sites that capture more light, which can improve low light photos and generally improve shots. Indeed, the camera captures pleasing colors with good sharpness but it still handles high contrast scenes poorly with blown out whites. Colors tend toward the cool side, và are a bit less accurate than the i
Phone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S5 & Nokia Lumia 1520/Nokia Lumia Icon. The drawback of the 4MP equivalent sensor is the relatively low resolution of photos; there isn"t much opportunity for cropping without things becoming a blotchy mess. But taken as a whole, the images are good, & if you don"t vì chưng more than post to lớn Facebook or personal blogs, then it"s a perfectly adequate camera. If you"re a camera enthusiast (as I admittedly am) hoping to lớn use your điện thoại cảm ứng as a decent point & shoot digicam substitute, the M8"s exposure & sometimes bleached look HDR shots won"t win hearts and eyeballs. HDR certainly could be improved with a software update, & given how actively smartphone htc is issuing software updates via Google Play, perhaps we"ll see some tweaks soon.

*

Above: a pleasing photo taken in even lighting on a partly cloudy day. Below: notice how high contrast results in blown out highlights và a loss of detail.

*

Sadly, the điện thoại htc One M8 loses the optical image stabilization that we loved in the old One and in various hãng nokia Windows phones. We particularly missed it for clip recording where it would have helped calm video clip jitters. 1080p video capture has pleasing colors & decent contrast, though we noticed the same tendency to blow out highlights as we saw on with photos. In evenly lit settings, including night settings, the camera can acquire some nice footage with very good audio quality.

HTC added a secondary rear camera, and thankfully this doesn"t herald a return lớn the failed 3D điện thoại cảm ứng thông minh cameras of old. Instead it captures depth info to lớn aide in software photo editing features like Ufocus that let you create background blur và Dimension Plus that does a 3d perspective shift that you enact by tilting the camera (if that"s hard lớn imagine, watch our đoạn phim where I chạy thử the feature--it"s actually cool). And yes, Zoe is still here so you can create a short presentation of moving photos.

Battery Life

Good news, the smartphone htc One M8 has better battery life than the first ren One và it beats many other current smartphones on the market. We had a hard time killing the 2600 m
Ah Lithium Ion with a heavy day of use that included streaming clip for an hour, using the GPS for a half hour trip, 30 minutes of calls, taking 40 photos và 5 full HD videos & playing 45 minutes of games (Real Racing 3 mostly). Rather than plugging the phone in before bed, we let it sit idle overnight & still had enough juice to lớn power through until 11am. Nice. We didn"t dip below 7 hours of actual screen on time, which is quite good for today"s phones... Watch out, LG G2 you have competition.

Conclusion

It"s hard khổng lồ not fall in love with the smartphone htc One M8 unless you"re a rabid i
Phone/Windows Phone/Black
Berry fan or esthetically challenged. Heck, even if you could care less about your phone"s looks, the htc One M8"s big và clear screen, fast performance, tasteful game android presentation and solid battery life are captivating. We"re in love with the front 5MP camera, and give htc kudos for improving what seems like the red headed stepchild of features khổng lồ many manufacturers. Our only complaint is the rear camera; sure the software is very nice but the camera resolution will disappoint the hordes of users who"ve abandoned point and shoots in favor of capable high resolution camera phones. Despite how lovely the new One is in most every respect, it doesn"t have a drop dead killer feature that will make waves of i
Phone & Samsung Galaxy owners convert. These days, smartphones evolve slowly so we certainly won"t single out smartphone htc for being less than revolutionary, but HTC"s been bleeding market share & they need something big to win it back. As lovely as the htc One M8 is, I"m not sure it will turn the tide, or rather the flood that the i
Phone & Samsung"s various Galaxy phones represent.

HTC remains one of few app android OEMs insanely focused on design. Even dating back khổng lồ the origins of the One brand in 2012 with the One X and One S, htc clearly saw design where others were more focused on cost optimization. Only time will tell which is the more viable long term business strategy, but in the interim we’ve seen two generations of well crafted devices from what would otherwise be thought of as a highly unlikely source. With its roots in the ODM/OEM space, điện thoại htc is one of very few ODM turned retail success stories that we’ve seen come out of Taiwan. Hãng asus is the closest & only real comparison I can make.

As its name implies, the goal of the One brand was to have a device that anyone, anywhere in the world could ask for và know they were getting an excellent experience. Although smartphone htc sort of flubbed the original intent by introducing multiple derivatives (One X, One S, One X+), it was the beginning of relief from the sort of app android OEM spaghetti we saw not too long ago. With the One brand, smartphone htc brought focus lớn its product line.

Last year htc took a significant step towards evolving the brand into one true flagship device, aptly named the One. Once again there were derivatives (One mini và One max), but the messaging was far less confusing this time around. If you wanted small you got the mini, if you wanted big you got the max, otherwise all you needed khổng lồ ask for was the One.

With last year’s One (codenamed M7), điện thoại htc was incredibly ambitious. Embracing a nearly all metal design và opting for a much lower resolution, but larger format rear camera sensor, the One was not only bold but quite costly to lớn make. With the premium điện thoại market dominated by Apple & Samsung, and the rest of the world headed lớn lower cost devices, it was a risky proposition. From a hàng hóa standpoint, I’d consider the M7 One a success. A year ago I found myself calling it the best app android phone I’d ever used.

It didn’t take long for my obsession to shift lớn the moto X, and then the Nexus 5, although neither delivered the overall camera experience of the One. Neither device came close khổng lồ equaling htc on the thiết kế front either, although I maintain Motorola did a great job with in hand feel. Although I found myself moving to newer devices since my time with the One last year, anytime I picked up the old M7 I was quickly reminded that htc built a device unlike any other in the apk space. It just needed a refresh.

It’s been leaked beyond belief, but in case you haven’t seen it by now this is the M8, the new điện thoại htc One:

*

It’s taller và slightly wider than last year’s model (with a correspondingly larger 5” 1080p display), but all at roughly the same thickness. The all metal chassis is back, but with more metal. If you remove the display và internals, điện thoại htc claims the M8 chassis is now 90% metal compared to lớn 70% with the M7. There is a weight impact, but the M8 never feels heavy at 160 grams.

The plastic ring around the M7 is gone, replaced with a single piece of aluminum that curves around the body. With the exception of a strip along the top edge, Boom
Sound speaker grills và some narrow strips on the back for antennas, the M8 is all metal.

*

The M8’s surface is a bit smoother than the M7, & there’s now a nice horizontal brushed effect in the gunmetal gray finish. The device is still every bit as wonderful to lớn hold as its predecessor. The design is different, và overall I’d consider it better. For those who care about material feel & design it’s clearly a màn chơi above what you see on the market at this price point.

The device will be available in three different colors: Gunmetal Gray (what I was sampled), Glacial Silver & Amber Gold.

HTC also ditched the two fixed capacitive buttons, which was a pain point for some with the M7. Instead we have up to lớn four on-screen buttons at the bottom of the display: back, home, multitasking, và menu as appropriate.

Appearances are meaningless if the device doesn’t have the hardware to lớn back it up, and thankfully the M8 is an upgrade almost entirely across the board. I threw the relevant spec differences into the table below:

There’s a faster (and more nguồn efficient So
C), a larger battery, và a higher resolution front facing camera. Boom
Sound gets a new amp & better sounding speakers, there's also a new dual color flash và a well integrated micro SD thẻ slot (one that doesn't require a removable back). If you were pleased with last year’s One, chances are that you’ll be very happy with this one. If, however, you weren’t totally sold on the M7’s 4MP Ultra
Pixel camera there’s a bit of bad news.

The story of last year’s One revolved around HTC’s decision to lớn use a larger format 4MP camera sensor instead of moving khổng lồ a higher megapixel sensor with smaller pixels. It was a polarizing tradeoff, but one that was somewhat validated by táo bị cắn dở with its choice of maintaining resolution but increasing pixel/sensor form size with the 5s. The most obvious fix for those who had issues with the lack of spatial resolution with last year’s One would be khổng lồ go khổng lồ a higher resolution sensor, without going as far as Samsung & LG. Unfortunately, without the buying power nguồn of a company like Apple, điện thoại htc is left lớn pick from those sensors that are more widely available. In other words, options are limited.

The solution this round was lớn keep the rear sensor from the M7 (without OIS), and augment it with another rear facing camera module. I’ll get to the use of the second sensor in a bit, but ultimately that’s the going lớn be the biggest friction point with the new One. Those customers who were happy with the M7’s camera will be pleased this round, but those who wanted a slight bump in spatial resolution will be left wanting more.

Cellular Bands và What’s Launching

I’m aware of seven different M8 SKUs launching today. In the US, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint & Verizon are all getting the new htc One. Verizon had immediate availability in stores 2 hours after launch, while AT&T & Sprint were available online the same day. All three operators should have devices by April 11th. T-Mobile is the exception as it won’t have the M8 in stores until next month.

Google will be taking preorders for the Google Play Edition of the new One today. Despite shipping with GPE Android, smartphone htc claims the GPE M8 will support Duo Cam via HTC’s APIs (perhaps via a modified AOSP camera app?).

As far as I can tell only the AT&T và Google Play Edition SKUs tư vấn carrier aggregation. The two SKUs are quite similar from a cellular standpoint, with the AT&T mã sản phẩm locking out UMTS band 4 to lớn discourage movement lớn T-Mobile.

With the exception of the Sprint SKU, all of the remaining M8 SKUs feature Qualcomm’s QFE11xx envelop power tracker. In addition, all SKUs with the exception of the T-Mobile & Sprint devices use Qualcomm’s QFE15xx antenna matching tuner. None of the M8s use the CMOS power nguồn amps and it’s still too early for the rest of Qualcomm’s RF360 platform. Unfortunately this present refresh comes a little too early for Qualcomm’s next-generation Category 6 LTE 9x35 modem.

Launching with immediate availability in the US và UK, with other regions following in the coming weeks, is an incredibly difficult feat to pull off. It also helps explain why there were so many leaks leading up lớn today’s launch. The real trick is timing launch availability and sampling so you don’t have operator partners spoiling your launch, but that’s a challenge for another day.

Inside the One’s box you’ll find the usual suspects: earbuds, USB cable & charger. New this round is you’ll find a simple case in your box. The included case is a no frills design, but it’s awesome to find something lượt thích that in the box these days.

*

HTC will gladly sell you one of their Double Dip, Flip or new Dot View cases. The former now includes two sets of top/bottom colors with each case. The Dot View case is interesting as it enables some glance usage models, but without an AMOLED display I’m curious about the nguồn impact.
